A Rail of a Trail itinerary

Unlike many places around the world, New Zealand does not have an extensive rail network connecting the country, many of us opting to fly between places instead.  In fact, outside of Auckland CityWellington City and their surrounding suburbs, you'd be lucky to find a train that can take you anywhere! But while New Zealand might not be criss-crossed with tracks, it does serve up some unforgettable and wonderfully scenic rail journeys and experiences.

On the North Island, the Northern Explorer Train travels between Auckland and Wellington one day, returning back to Auckland the next. You'll see extremes in scenery from fertile farmland to active volcanic peaks. Soar across deep ravines and be impressed by epic landscapes in spacious seats with panoramic windows on New Zealand's longest running passenger service.

The South Island rail journeys offer incredibly scenery too, with the Coastal Pacific Train travelling daily from Picton through to Christchurch between the roaring sea and enormous bush-clad mountains, while the Tranz Alpine Train traverses daily across the striking landscape of the Southern Alps, running between Christchurch and Greymouth. The charming Taieri Gorge Railway travels from Dunedin to Central Otago and showcases spectacular vistas combined with insight into our pioneering heritage.

As always, we cater to you, but if you want rail to feature prominently in your visit to New Zealand, check out this itinerary, and contact us to collaborate your trip ideas with our local insight and advice. The sooner you get in touch, the sooner you'll be saying "it's Time 2 Go!
